TMC the metals company Inc. is a pre-revenue deep-sea minerals exploration and development company focused on unlocking battery-grade metals from the ocean floor. The company's core business model centers on the collection, processing, and refining of polymetallic nodules located in the Clarion Clipperton Zone (CCZ) of the Pacific Ocean, where it holds exploration and commercial rights. These unattached seafloor nodules contain high concentrations of nickel, cobalt, copper, and manganese—critical raw materials required for electric vehicle (EV) batteries, energy storage systems, and clean energy infrastructure.
Currently in the pre-commercial phase, TMC does not yet generate operating revenue and is actively navigating the regulatory pathways required to commence commercial extraction. The company is pursuing exploitation licenses through the International Seabed Authority (ISA) and under the U.S. Deep Seabed Hard Mineral Resources Act. To facilitate its operations, TMC has partnered with offshore engineering firms like Allseas to develop and deploy specialized deep-water nodule collection systems and surface vessels. Once commercialized, TMC plans to generate revenue by selling the extracted and refined metals to metal buyers, EV manufacturers, and industrial users. The company's distinctive approach to sourcing critical minerals aims to provide an alternative to conventional land-based mining, positioning it at the forefront of the emerging deep-sea mining industry.
