Transportadora de Gas del Sur S.A. (TGS) is a leading midstream energy company in Argentina, established in 1992 following the privatization of the state-owned gas utility Gas del Estado. The company operates a pipeline network spanning over 9,200 kilometers, transporting approximately 60% of the natural gas consumed in Argentina. Its infrastructure connects the Neuquén, San Jorge, and Austral basins to major consumption centers, including the Greater Buenos Aires area, serving natural gas distributors and large industrial clients rather than direct residential end users.
TGS operates through four main business segments: Natural Gas Transportation, Liquids Production and Commercialization, Midstream and Other Services, and Telecommunications. The Liquids segment is a major revenue driver, accounting for approximately 45% to 48% of total revenues in 2024. This segment involves the production of ethane, propane, butane, and natural gasoline at the General Cerri Complex in Bahía Blanca, serving both domestic and export markets. The regulated Natural Gas Transportation segment contributes around 35% to 43% of revenues, generating stable cash flows through firm transportation contracts. The Midstream segment (around 18% of revenues) has been a key growth area, with TGS investing heavily in gas conditioning and gathering infrastructure in the Vaca Muerta shale play, positioning itself as a pioneering midstreamer in the region. Additionally, the company operates a telecommunications business, Telcosur, which provides data transmission services. TGS holds a dominant competitive position in Argentina's energy infrastructure sector, benefiting from high barriers to entry, its extensive existing network, and its strategic footprint in the rapidly developing Vaca Muerta formation.
