QuantumScape Corporation is a development-stage company focused on the commercialization of next-generation solid-state lithium-metal batteries, primarily for the electric vehicle (EV) market. The company's proprietary technology replaces the liquid electrolyte and graphite anode used in conventional lithium-ion batteries with a solid-state ceramic separator and a pure lithium-metal anode. This design is intended to deliver significant improvements in energy density, charging speed, cycle life, and safety. Currently pre-revenue, QuantumScape operates primarily out of its headquarters and R&D facilities in San Jose, California, with additional operations in Kyoto, Japan. The company has established strategic partnerships with major automotive manufacturers, most notably a long-standing collaboration and licensing agreement with Volkswagen Group's battery unit, PowerCo, to industrialize and scale its technology. QuantumScape's first planned commercial product is the QSE-5 cell, which is currently undergoing prototype testing and validation with automotive OEMs.
