Natural Resource Partners L.P. (NRP) operates an asset-light business model focused on the ownership, management, and leasing of natural resource properties across the United States. Rather than engaging directly in mining or drilling operations, NRP acts as a landlord, leasing its extensive mineral rights to third-party operators in exchange for royalty payments and lease fees. This structure allows the partnership to generate cash flow while avoiding direct operational risks and capital expenditures associated with resource extraction.
The company operates through two primary business segments: Mineral Rights and Soda Ash. The Mineral Rights segment, which accounted for approximately 80% of total revenues in 2023, encompasses roughly 13 million acres of mineral interests and subsurface rights. The majority of revenues in this segment are derived from coal royalties, with reserves located in the Appalachia, Illinois, and Northern Powder River basins. The coal portfolio includes both metallurgical coal used in steel production and thermal coal used for power generation. The segment also includes royalties from aggregates, industrial minerals, oil and gas, and timber, as well as emerging initiatives in carbon sequestration and renewable energy.
The Soda Ash segment, representing about 20% of revenues, consists of a 49% non-controlling equity interest in Sisecam Wyoming LLC. Located in the Green River Basin of Wyoming, this joint venture is a producer of trona ore and soda ash, which is sold globally to the glass and chemicals industries. By maintaining a diversified portfolio of long-lived assets, NRP provides raw materials to the manufacturing, energy, and construction sectors.
