National Bank of Canada (Banque Nationale du Canada) is the sixth-largest commercial bank in Canada and a systemically important financial institution. Founded in 1859 and headquartered in Montreal, the bank provides a comprehensive range of financial products and services to retail, commercial, corporate, and institutional clients. The bank operates through four principal business segments. Personal and Commercial Banking is the largest division, accounting for 42% of 2023 revenue, and provides everyday banking, consumer lending, mortgages, and commercial financial services. While it has a national footprint, this segment holds a particularly dominant market share in its home province of Quebec. The Wealth Management segment (24% of revenue) offers investment solutions, trust services, and portfolio management to affluent individuals and institutional clients. The Financial Markets segment (23% of revenue) delivers corporate banking, advisory, and capital markets services, including equities and fixed-income trading, to corporate and government clients. Additionally, its U.S. Specialty Finance and International segment (11% of revenue) provides a unique growth engine that differentiates it from domestic peers; this includes subsidiaries like Credigy, which specializes in acquiring and managing consumer finance portfolios in the U.S., and ABA Bank, a leading retail and commercial financial institution in Cambodia. The bank's diversified business model, combined with its strategic international investments and disciplined risk management, allows it to consistently generate strong returns on equity. In recent years, the bank has also focused on expanding its presence in Western Canada, highlighted by its strategic acquisition of Canadian Western Bank (CWB) to further diversify its geographic footprint and bolster its commercial lending capabilities outside of Quebec.
