Clariant AG is an innovation-led pure-play specialty chemicals company operating globally across Europe, the Middle East, Africa, the Americas, and the Asia-Pacific region. Operating through more than 70 production and R&D sites worldwide, Clariant focuses on high-margin, customer-tailored formulations and functional chemical solutions.
The group operates and reports through three primary business units:
1. Care Chemicals (contributing ~54% of sales): Delivers specialty ingredients and formulations for consumer care (personal care, hair care, cosmetics, and home care) and industrial applications (crop solutions, paints and coatings, aviation de-icers, base chemicals, and oil and mining services). Growth in this division is supported by strategic acquisitions such as Lucas Meyer Cosmetics and Beraca.
2. Adsorbents & Additives (contributing ~25% of sales): Produces bentonite-based specialty adsorbents for edible oil purification, foundry additives, and desiccants, as well as performance additives, high-performance waxes, and non-halogenated flame retardants for plastics and coatings.
3. Catalysts (contributing ~21% of sales): Develops, produces, and licenses industrial catalyst technologies for chemical synthesis, syngas, petrochemicals (such as propane dehydrogenation), fuels, and emission reduction applications supporting the global energy transition.
Geographically, Clariant's revenue is well balanced, with EMEA representing approximately 42% of sales, Asia-Pacific generating around 29%, and the Americas contributing 29%. Having strategically divested its commoditized masterbatches and pigments divisions, Clariant has repositioned its portfolio around specialty, sustainability-oriented chemistries characterized by resilient margins and secular growth drivers.
