Peabody Energy Corporation is one of the world's largest private-sector coal producers, engaged in the mining, preparation, and sale of thermal and metallurgical coal. The company operates 16 active mines across the United States (including the Powder River Basin in Wyoming and the Illinois Basin) and Australia (Queensland and New South Wales). Peabody's business is organized into four primary operating segments: Powder River Basin, Other U.S. Thermal, Seaborne Thermal, and Seaborne Metallurgical.
Thermal coal, which is primarily sold to electric utilities for power generation, accounts for the vast majority of the company's production volume and approximately 75% to 80% of its total revenue. The Powder River Basin segment alone represents the largest volume contributor, anchored by the North Antelope Rochelle mine, the largest coal mine in the world by production volume. The Seaborne Metallurgical segment, which produces coking coal used in steel manufacturing, accounts for approximately 20% to 25% of total revenue and serves a global customer base, particularly in the Asia-Pacific region.
In addition to its core mining operations, Peabody engages in direct coal trading and brokerage activities, managing logistics, rail loadouts, and port throughput to optimize its supply chain. The company balances its revenue streams through a mix of long-term supply contracts with domestic utilities and spot market sales exposed to international pricing benchmarks. While facing long-term secular headwinds from global decarbonization efforts, Peabody maintains a strong liquidity position and continues to invest in high-margin metallurgical coal assets, such as the Centurion Mine in Australia, to diversify its cash flow profile.
